RECENT HUMANITARIAN MISSIONS
DR. CHRISTINE WINTER CORELLA

March 2007 -- Berazategui & Quilmes, Argentina

Argentina, not typically thought of as a poor country, is currently recovering from a severe economic collapse that took place in 2001 - 2002.  This Argentine financial crisis has been compared in scope to America's great crash of 1929.  In the wake of the economic collapse, over half of the population fell under the poverty line, and over a quarter were classified as indigent.  With a team of 4 U.S. optometrists, 14 support people, and help from Argentine eye doctors, our efforts focused on the unemployed families of Berazategui & Quilmes, small cities on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.  With this fine team, we were able to examine 3,238 patients and dispense glasses to over 95% of them.

April 2006 -- Lima, Peru

Lima is both the capital and largest city in Peru. Today nearly one-third of the nation's population lives in this one metropolitan area.  The most populous districts of Lima lie in the north and south ends of the city. Their population is comprised principally of immigrants from other regions of Peru. Many of them are poor people of indigenous origin who arrived during the mid and late twentieth century after being displaced by terrorism, agrarian crises, and general economic frustration. These peasants invaded the vast desert areas and hillsides in the districts of the Cono Norte and Cono Sur areas, populating new slums known as pueblos jóvenes. The majority of the people are poor and live in slums with no electricity and running water.  These are the areas that our team, comprised of 5 U.S. optometrists, and 20 optometry students, performed over 1,200 comprehensive eye health and vision exams, and dispensed just as many glasses.
