Dr. Todd Heying is a four-year Presidential Scholar from the Illinois College of Optometry who has never stopped learning about optometry. He began practicing optometry in Cedar Rapids in 1998 and is deeply committed to improving patient health by enhancing their vision.

He enjoys all areas of optometry especially Corneal Refractive Therapy and helping difficult-to-fit contact lens patients. With optimal patient care in mind, Dr. Heying keeps current with research and invests in the latest optometric technology. Thanks to his dedication, an eye exam at Cedar Rapids Eye Care is the most thorough exam available in the area and the diagnostics allow for the most precise prescription to suit individual patient needs.

After graduating from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1998, Dr. Kara Heying joined her father’s practice and pioneered optometric vision therapy in Cedar Rapids.

She passed rigorous exams and is a certified Fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development.

Dr. Kara Heying has served on the COVD Board of Directors and is the former President of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. She lectures on developmental optometry and vision therapy across the nation and in foreign countries.

She enjoys keeping current with the research in developmental optometry, working with pediatric patients, and leading the team of vision therapists.

Outside of the lecture circuit and The Children’s Eye Center, she plays tennis, volunteers, and cheers on her three daughters at show choir performances, basketball games, and their many school and church activities.
 

Dr. Ryan Berger was born and raised in Iowa City, where he went on to obtain his bachelors degree at the University of Iowa. He received his doctorate from the Illinois College of Optometry where he gained excellent education and clinical experience treating diverse ophthalmic conditions.

In addition to primary eye care, he has had access to specialty service areas including contact lenses, low vision, pediatrics/binocular vision. He enjoys treating all areas of optometric care and has had extensive training in managing glaucoma and fitting contact lenses.

As a member of the Cedar Rapids Eye Care team, Dr. Berger is committed to taking the time necessary to understand his patients’ needs and providing outstanding care.

Outside of the office, Dr. Berger enjoys playing golf, basketball and flag football. He can also be found watching his niece’s sporting events. He is an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan and enjoys spending time with his family and friends.

Dr. Christine Winter-Rundell joined Cedar Rapids Eye Care and The Children’s Eye Center after graduating from The Southern College of Optometry where she received the Gold Key award for service and community leadership. Her broad professional interests motivated her to become the only doctor in Iowa to complete two post-doctorate fellowships: the prestigious American Academy of Optometry and the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. In addition to working in children’s vision and vision-related learning challenges, Dr. Winter-Rundell enjoys adult primary care, elder care, conducting brain injury assessments, and nutrition counseling for healthy vision and improved overall health.

Dr. Winter-Rundell is passionate about her mission work to provide vision care in Latin America. She has been on seven mission trips with more to come. She is fluent in Spanish and offers exams for Spanish-speaking patients.

Outside the office, she and her husband, Justin, parent their five children. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family, travelling, mountain biking, and spending time on or near water. She strives to live an active and healthy lifestyle—look for her at your next 10K.

A native of Davenport, Iowa, Dr. Schaefer has been practicing optometry in Iowa since 2007. She earned her undergraduate degree from Iowa State University before completing her Doctor of Optometry degree at Nova Southeastern University. She also completed a residency in cornea and contact lenses at the University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Optometry.

We are excited that Dr. Schaefer’s professional journey has brought her to Cedar Rapids. She is certified in ocular disease treatment and offers a full range of services, including post-operative LASIK care, cataract management, glaucoma treatment, and dry eye services. Dr. Schaefer’s comprehensive approach to eye care will benefit patients of all ages, and her warm and genuine personality will be a perfect fit for the Cedar Rapids Eye Care team.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Schaefer enjoys spending quality time with her family and friends, golfing, and reading. A passionate sports enthusiast and proud Iowa State Cyclones fan, she especially loves watching her daughter compete in gymnastics.
